Hi Dr. Sider! I appreciate your take on political and social issues these apast few decades. Have you considered looking at the American Solidarity Party? I combines Catholic Social Teaching and Kyperian political theology. I think it would be a good alternative to the pro abortion and LGBT views of Democrats and the authoritatian postmodernism of the Republicans.
Come on Man! Joe Biden is a serial liar, a criminal who stole the election . He is for everything that God hates .. Abortion, Homosexuality, CRT, Woke Cancel Culture and much more .. How you or any Christians can vote for this monster is unfathomable. He is tearing this great nation apart before your eyes and yet you say "many, many of President Biden’s policies are wise and just: " That's hogwash Ron , and you know it .. Conservative Christian Values are God's values ... God does not say there is any time permissable to kill innocent people .. You need to seriously look at what you believe Liberal Christians are being deceived , and you Sir ,are helping deceiving them ..
I do appreciate the intent, but I think you need to dig deeper into what Democrats think about these topics. David Brooks has continually simplified everything in his efforts to speak from a position of Christian Morality. Most Democrats I know believe abortion isn't something that can be regulated by the government, but rather an issue between a woman, her family and her physician. Most Americans believe abortion should be legal, and yes have a gradient of views about when and how.
The challenge is who gets to "police" it, hence the desperate and dangerous efforts of Texas Republicans to deputize people against their neighbors.
As to LGBTQ rights, it is clear that many Christians take a literalist reading of a small handful of scriptures and somehow believe sexual orientation is a "choice". The absurdity is that even if you think orientation is a "Sin", you cannot love a sinner by shunning them. Strange thing that many who claim to be Christians have made their concept of sexual sins on the level of murder, and are willing to push desperate young people to the brink of self destruction by their condemnations. As soon as the church takes the rest of the deadly sins seriously, society will listen. Not likely to happen anytime soon.
So called "orientation" is not a sin. Acting on "orientation" outside of a Christian marriage (which is impossible with two people of the same sex) is a sin. But who said people struggling with their impulses and disordered desires should be "shunned"? Fornication is a serious sin and should not be condoned. I don't see where the Church (at least my church the Catholic Church) does not take all sins seriously.
The Democrats under both Bush administrations and trump supported a lot of legislation to move society forward. But Republicans and specifically McConnell, continue to block any and all attempts for legislation. David Brooks has some great ideas but this is not one of them. Ron Sider, I was drawn to your blog because you express a lot of open Christian views, but this is not one of them
A fair assessment of the Democrats. I would love to see you balance the scales by posting another article: "Problems With Republicans."
